Xanadu is buzzing this afternoon with with food stands and booths with games to play and trinkets to sell or win. There are a couple of stages where people play instruments, sing, juggle, and otherwise entertain.

People donated money, time and materials to bring everything together. Some areas are very polished and professional while others have more of a homemade touch, but it blends together nicely and there is a little something for everyone. A little further from the main attractions there is space for relaxing or playing a game of frisbee or catch.

As the evening settles upon the City, paper lanterns light up an outdoor dance floor and a band plays a range of music from romantic to spirited. There are also tables set up for those who would prefer to star or people gaze.

I have a roommate. And a second job. A cat. I've... been. [ she's fine, Sam. thank you for asking. she thinks your brother's an alcoholic but that's not her business ] This reminds me of Mystic Falls. There's always an event going on. Something is being commemorated or celebrated.

You sound busy. [Which is good, here. Keeps the mind off things.] Mystic Falls. I've never been. Do you like it there?

I am. [ It's what she needs right now. ] It's home. It always has been. I love it. [ She has a real pride when it comes to Mystic Falls. ] Where are you from?

[Sam looks down, laughing slightly.]

Nowhere, really. I mean, I was born in Kansas. We... moved a lot, though. After my mom died.

For your dad's job?

Something like that. [There's a hesitancy there it shouldn't be hard to pick up on.] Sort of a family business.

[ She can definitely pick up what Sam is dropping. ] Did you not like what your family did? Or, that you had to move?

[Sam sighs.]

I just wanted us to be normal. You know?

[He looks over, realizing that he has no idea if she'd know. Most people he's met are normal. They don't have a clue what it's like to look at that from afar.]

... In - in some ways I do. [ She thinks. Is he a vampire? A witch? Or Luka called himself a warlock. Or, did he just know them? Then again there are abnormal yet... real things - not that vampires weren't perfectly real for her. ] And now you're here.

Yeah. [Sam laughs softly.] Which is about as far from normal as you can get, and yet... I don't know. Everyone's sort of in the same boat, here. It's different. You're not different by yourself. If that makes sense.

You felt different by yourself. [ she's trying to listen carefully, get the right things out of this. ]

[Sam nods.]

Yeah. I knew things--because of my family, because of what we did--we couldn't tell other people. We couldn't just... live normal lives, like them. Here, no one's living a normal life. Or I mean... Maybe what I mean is, normal means something else, here. Something I can be.

What did you do, Sam?

[Sam shrugs. It's always hard to broach, even here.]

It's not... something people really get. You wouldn't believe me.

[ You're telling her. ]

Try me.

[Sam eyes her.]

You won't think I'm crazy?

I dropped into a fountain and I found out I can't get back to where I'm from. Every few days something strange and unexplainable happens. People's personalities can change on a dime. Whole areas of the city appear and disappear at will.

Yeah, but I'm not talking about the City. [Sam crosses his arms.] I'm talking about the world I come from. Even there, though, people don't believe in these things. In ghosts, demons, vampires. [He watches her carefully.] We protect people.

Vampires? [ Buzz word, Sam. That is a buzz word. ] Protect how?

Different ways. Depends on the threat. You know, that's not the question I thought you'd ask.

You think all ghosts and demons and [ the tiniest of pauses as her inflection changes ] vampires are a threat. What did you think I'd ask?

[Sam shrugged.]

Whether I was kidding. Whether they were really real. They're not all a threat, but... I mean, the ones we hear about, it's because they're hurting people. Though... you know, I've never met a demon up to anything good.

I've never met a demon. [ Vampires are a completely different story! ] I know you weren't kidding.

Oh. [Sam considers that for a moment.] So... things are weird, back where you're from?

Yeah. Things are weird. [ though, she wouldn't call them weird. ] Your family... takes care of the weird?
