When; the early morning after their arrival, 06/14
Rating; PG
Characters; asami sato and mako
Summary; apologies and some awkward attempts at conversation
Log;
[ of course, she hadn't gotten much sleep. it'd been well into the early hours of the morning by the time her talk with korra had finished, and by then she'd been so exhausted that sleep easily claimed her. still, she had only about four solid hours of sleep before she was woken up again, and with light just beginning to filter in through the horizon, she figured there was no point in trying for any more.
she couldn't stay in the room, either. "the" room, not quite "her" room yet, even though all signs point to some incarnation of her having lived here before... it's hardly been a day, and the full weight of what's happened to them has yet to settle on her shoulders. restless, though, she opted for some light exploring instead. recalling what korra had told her of the beach house, she steered clear of the bedrooms she knew were occupied, and instead poked in the rooms that were likely to be empty that morning — the training room, the storage, bolin's room...
she lingers just a little bit behind the door, unwittingly reminded of the other brother. she recalls, too, what korra had said about the two of them, and even she still has a hard time stomaching it... she can only imagine what mako must be feeling.
with a sigh, she pushes into the room, only to stop short upon realizing it isn't as empty as she thought. ]

He needs that. He never stopped needing Bolin.
And then there's Korra, who renders him pensive right along with his little brother. He'd left her last night to think about their relationship and a part of him wonders if she's even bothering to do that. Maybe he shouldn't have left her. Maybe he should have plead his case some more. Kissed her. Showed her how much he cares for her. It's a transition that doesn't make a lick of sense to him. The way she's regarded him thus far has been like meeting her twin.
He rubs his temples and tries to convince himself that it'll be okay, just leave it alone for now, when he hears the door creak behind him. He looks back and releases the breath he'd been holding.]
Hey.

he looks so tired. there, around his eyes, even more so now than ever before; the slight slump of his shoulders, the resigned way he stands. yet still, despite this, his stance is tall, set. the stance of someone used to adversity, to dealing with things that they shouldn't have to, and for a long time asami had envied that about mako, envied the way he seemed to just be able to withstand anything, not because he can, but because he has to, and now...
he looks so very small in the middle of the near-empty room.
asami can't shake the feeling that she's just walked into something very, very private. ]
Hey.
Sorry, I didn't realize anyone would be in here...
[ she hesitates, just in between the door enough that it would take just as much effort to back out as it would to step in.
instead, she opens the door a little wider. ]
Did you manage to get some sleep?
no subject
He doesn't tell her it's okay that she's here. The fact that he isn't chasing her away should convey that enough, he figures.]
Yeah, I did. You? [He slept four hours, at best. It's hard for him to sleep past the sunrise.]
no subject
It's still pretty surreal, isn't it...
no subject
It's just that no matter how hard he tries, there's no logical explanation for it. The fact that he was here once is the real kicker. Or maybe the fact that Korra is claiming to have been here for about a year, even though he's only known her for a few months, is the real brain buster.]
I have a feeling it won't stop here, either. I'm investigating this place later today, so we'll see what surprises crop up.
no subject
Well, let us know if you find anything interesting. Do you know where you'll be going?
no subject
[He begins to walk past her and out of the room.]
You want breakfast?
no subject
still, she thinks she might actually hear something of an invitation in those words... but before she can even go around accepting it, she has to clarify one thing first: ]
Yeah, but... Listen, Mako, about the other day — when we first arrived... I'm sorry I snapped at you.
no subject
That's still bothering you? [He glances back to get a read on her expression.]
1/2
right. priorities.
(but once upon a time he had been one of her top priorities. hadn't she been his?) ]
no subject
Not really, I just thought I might as well clear the air in case it was bothering you.

[This is where he would normally turn around and continue for the kitchen, but the significance of the incident isn't completely lost on him. Really, the only time they'd ever fought was when their relationship was on the rocks. Otherwise they were usually pretty agreeable with each other, weren't they?]
I don't let those kinds of fights get to me, so don't worry about it. If anything, I probably owe you an apology because I started it.
no subject
[ she says it in a tone that seems to imply she's joking, but there's also something pretty expectant about her smile.
girls man. girls. ]
no subject
Alright. Asami Sato, please accept my apology.
[AND THEN HE FELT THE DAMN CHILL]
no subject
It doesn't even bother me anymore. But if you'd like to serve your apology with breakfast, I'd more gladly accept it.

Just this once. That Tohru girl said she's been cooking for the whole house, so I'd like to teach everyone some basics at some point.

You want to start this morning, then?
no subject
I guess I could... [ but wow, suddenly nerves. ] couldn't I watch the master at work, first?
no subject
And just like that, as they enter the kitchen, Mako falls into a mindset for cooking. With pursed lips he swiftly scopes out the cabinets, pulling out pots and necessary ingredients as he finds them. Without looking at her, Mako extends a pot her way, while his other hand rifles through a carton of eggs to find the good ones.]
Here, fill this up with water, about two-thirds.
no subject
he isn't doing any of this for himself. ]
Sir, yes, sir! [ she finishes with a little salute that she's seen the police cadets use in the academy, before turning to her task. she fills the pot up (quite well, she might add), and returns before long, setting it just beside his elbow where he works on the counter. ]
