Lucky's casino is busy as usual on Thursday, but those inside will notice that the stage normally reserved for entertainment is shrouded in a large curtain. The owner is seated, prepared to listen to the audition of a buxom blond who seems shy and has no real command over the stage. After a deep breath, she begins to sing in a voice barely above a whisper:

"Happy birthday to you~"

Before she can really get into the meat of the song, the curtain rises to reveal an unusual spectacle. Women of all sizes and shapes dressed comfortably in next to nothing. Those inside the casino can see them make a musical entrance. They seem to dote especially on the owner, who appears to be hoisted in his seat by two beefy men in shiny speedos. They carry him closer to what appears to be a cake.

It's not.

The exterior slips away revealing a mounted pole and another woman who has no problem steadying her stilettos on the arms of the chair the owner is being held captive in from time to time.

Looks like it's SOMEONE'S BIRTHDAY

All varieties of business continue as usual after the reveal. The women and men will flirt with anyone who has the means to earn their attention. There's even a new racehorse to the circuit being promoted out back! Come evening, patriotic Americans launch fireworks into the night sky. So come! There's good company, gambling, drinks and dancing-- eat, drink and be merry in honor of the holiday and Meyer Lansky's birthday!

At exactly 12:01 on July 5, Ruby arrives back in the City. This time, however, instead of finding herself appearing there, she was invited to return, and jumped at the opportunity. She immediately heads over to Lucky's, and is surprised to see it far rowdier than usual. As she pushes her way inside, the scantily clad women make her do a doubletake, but her expression is filled with amusement rather than distaste.

She wends her way through the crowd, trying to find someone she recognizes.

By 12:01, Meyer's pretty damn drunk. Drunk enough that he's enjoying the party, rather than standing awkwardly in the corner. He has a drink in his hand, and he's laughing at something someone else is saying, but some strange impulse makes him look over his shoulder, and then he sees Ruby.

His jaw, quite literally, drops. He has no idea what to say, but a big grin spreads across his face, one of absolute delight. "Ruby!" he exclaims, loud enough to be heard over the crowd.

She spins round when she hears him call out her name, her smile widening into a beaming grin. "Well, well. Meyer Lansky, I never thought I'd see you again."

"I never thought I'd see you again, either! When'd you get here?"

And can he really hope she'll be here for longer than a weekend? He's not sure. Is it wrong to hope she stays?

"Literally just now. I came straight over here." She glances round at the hookers again. "Looks like you've diversified while I was away."

[recognize_an_opportunity]

"Well..."

He has the dignity to look a little sheepish, at least, although he's laughing as he speaks. "This whole... event is for my birthday. It's not a regular thing."

[spotlighted]

"Surprise party?" It's a complete guess, but she's pretty confident that the Meyer she knows would never arrange something like this himself. It was almost as though it was designed to be fun, and that was something Meyer didn't really know how to have. "I bet you've got Al to thank for this, huh?"

[recognize_an_opportunity]

"A surprise party, thanks to Al and Theo, of course."

His slight sway as he stands there and slur in his words indicates that he's enjoying the party a lot more than he normally would be. It's been hours, and he's had a lot to drink.

"It's better now that you're here."

[spotlighted]

"Of course it is." She sounds very pleased and assured of herself, and smirks over at him before something occurs to her, and her expression settles into something more serious. "...Say Meyer, how long is it since I left this place anyway?"

His face goes a little more serious, too, matching hers. "A couple months. It's July now, and you left at the beginning of May, near as we can tell."

The party is still going strong, thankfully, and Al can enjoy himself with a substitute behind the bar. He's had a few drinks himself, enough that when a familiar face seems to enter the casino he has to move closer and really squint to confirm her identity.

"Red! Hey!"

Ruby grins, knowing there's only one person in the whole world that would call her that. "Al!" She shoves a large man blocking the quickest path to him out of the way, making her way over to him.

The sight of the man fumbling against her shove only makes the grin on his face all the wider. That's what this place has been missing. He moves forward himself to meet her halfway.

"You picked one hell of a night to come back to work," he teases.

[spotlighted]

"Some coincidence, huh?" She beams at him, then her smile drops to something more wry and amused as a mostly naked woman brushes past them. "I can't believe he let you do this."

[makingastatement]

"Let me do this?" The look is matched with a set of raised brows, "Sweetheart, in case you've forgotten, I don't need permission to do anything, especially from him."

Except maybe for work-related tasks such as dropping money, ordering supplies...whatever. It's a tease and she should know such.

"You look good. Life been treating you alright?"

[spotlighted]

"And you weren't worried he'd fire you or anything?"

She nods, smoothing back a curl as she does so. "I took your advice, headed for Chicago once the election was done with."

[makingastatement]

"Fire me?" he's not shy about pointing out the absurdity in her questions-- he worries about a few things in the City, but losing a job at a casino isn't one of them. "If anything we're doing him a favor. Besides, I've expanded my enterprises."

If that doesn't boost his pride, her next statement certainly does.

"I was right, wasn't I? I'll bet my left foot you're packing in the venues."

Though they never talked much, Theo does recognize Ruby when she reappears and brightens considerably.

"Ruby! Hey! You're back!"

[spotlighted]

"Hey Theo!" Ruby grins at him, hopping down from where she'd perched herself on the edge of the bar to greet him. "Yeah, I'm back! It feels like I've been gone a million years."

[deadmanbusiness]

"It does. We've all missed you." He'll give her a big hug, even if it does feel a bit weird.

"You look great!"

[spotlighted]

She returns the hug, squeezing a little affectionately at the compliment. "You don't look half bad yourself. Although I have to admit this isn't how I expected the joint to look when I got here."

[deadmanbusiness]

"Oh. Yeah. Al and I put together a surprise party for Meyer." He looks ridiculously pleased with himself.

[spotlighted]

She looks pretty impressed, too. "I can just imagine his face when he walked in and saw all this."

[deadmanbusiness]

Theo laughs. "Nah. What we did was have him sit down all quiet like and then had a singer come out and start singing happy birthday to him. THEN all this stuff happened. But I do wish I had a camera to take a picture of his face. It would have been priceless."

"Weren't you worried he'd get mad? I've never seen him as being able to have this kind of fun before."
