Characters; It's Ginny's birthday party and everybody Ginny knows was invited. Let's handwave that and just show up. BTW, IT'S BLACK TIE. PUT ON YOUR SUITS, BOYS.
Summary; There's no legal drinking age in the City, but who says we can't party like there was one anyway?

This party was four years coming. The restaurant has set aside a large room just for this event and on short notice too. The food is plentiful and of various cuisines, with even a large selection of vegetarian options for those who prefer that. But of course, there is more alcohol than one has ever seen because Angela knows the people she invited and knows quite a few of them have liquor in their veins instead of blood. Rule of thumb: more liquid than solids every time.

Everything's set and ready for the birthday girl to make her appearance, so for the time being, Angela's flitting around the place dressed in more subdued colors than usual, choosing black because no one gets to stand out more than Ginny tonight, and socializing with the few guests that have shown up already.

Sadly, there are no strippers. Ginny nixed that one hard.

[What pleases her the most about this evening is that it isn't just her friends, her friends have brought people too, and she loves meeting them and making new acquaintances, getting to know the City and the people in it. Flitting around the party and mingling with people, one can guess what she was like at school, one of the popular girls who knew everyone and was happy to know them all.]

What's her name? I'll keep an eye out.

[chakotay]

Kathryn Janeway.

[ funny how her name slides off his tongue so easily and that little smile he already had due to meeting ginny again grows just enough with fondness.

little does he know they've already met. chakotay knowing kathryn might also shed a little more light on him, even while casting shadows and questions on other aspects of his life. ]

She told me she'd be here. I'm hoping she'll at least come to say hello.

Oh, Ms Janeway! I've met her!

[She ran into her at the Hall of the Missing and had no idea they were from the same world. To be fair, she doesn't know very much about her apart from her science background; Ginny's more familiar with Chakotay, but any friend of his must be a good person.]

I mean, I've met her before. You're from the same world?

[chakotay]

[ it's very strange to hear someone call her "ms. janeway," but chakotay makes no sign that anything is different. ]

Yes. She's [ the woman i care for very much. ] a very good friend of mine. Do you mind if I ask how you met her? Or was it here today?

[hexuality]

[Janeway reminds Ginny of Professor McGonagall so the instinct to treat her as such could not be curbed.]

I actually met her the same day we ran into each other at the Hall of the Missing. She asked me about someone's portrait, but I didn't know who they were, so I don't remember... But she was nice. A scientist, right? Are you one as well?

[chakotay]

No. She's more the scientist than I am. [ his fond smile is totally going to give him away one of these days. ] I'm more interested in anthropology. I like studying different cultures. And I think she's turned me into a diplomat.

[hexuality]

That's right, I think we spoke about that!

[She grins.]

Diplomacy's hard. I'm impressed.

[chakotay]

[ he grins in return, lowering his voice almost conspiratorially. ]

She's the one who taught me. It's hard not to become one when you have to talk an angry woman down.

[ him, teasing kathryn when she's not around to defend herself? never. ]

[hexuality]

[She starts laughing, bright and happy.]

Maybe that's why Dad's gotten so good at it, too. Mum's a force, though Merlin knows I'm no better half of the time. Must've gotten it from her.

[chakotay]

[ good. laugh more, ginny. it makes everything okay. ]

I've heard tempers are hereditary. [ thinking fondly of you, b'elanna. ] One of my best friends has a temper you would never expect. She also got it from her mother.

[hexuality]

Comes with the hair, too, I've been told.

[She smirks.]

Haven't had much cause to go off on anyone lately, though. I'm trying to relax, you know.

[chakotay]

That might have something to do with it, but B'Elanna's a brunette. I think she just gets it from her ancestors. They were always known for their tempers.

[ don't get on the bad side of a klingon. it might be the last thing you do. ]

Relaxing is a perfectly good goal to have. I think it's one everyone should aspire to.

[hexuality]

And are you relaxing here? Curses aside. You can always take a walk in the gardens or on the beach to get away from the city proper.

[chakotay]

You know, I might do that sometime. I've been relaxing more than I initially thought I would, but I think a good walk along the beach might be good. If I go sometime, would you like to join me?

[hexuality]

I'd love to. [She smiles.] Never saw much of the beach at home so I take advantage of this one as much as I can.
