After the prank he'd pulled earlier, Sam thought Dean might need a break. He also thought it might be prudent not to be home when Dean got there. So Sam staked out a favorite bar of Dean's, called some of his friends, and left a note.

Dean--

Hey, didn't feel like cooking so I went out. Meet me at [some bar, come on Dean, it's your favorite! they have tater tots], okay? I have something to tell you. Sam

There was a chance Dean wouldn't come, but it was a bar, and the house would be quiet and lonely, and Sam was pretty sure he'd come. In the meantime, he savored the thought of the day Dean must have had...

Dean gets Sam's note after a long day of getting his ass smacked. He knows something's up but he figures it's something like birthday dinner with beer and tater tots. He can handle dinner with Sam for his birthday.

By the time he shows up at the bar, he's cranky. His ass hurts and it's his birthday so he's naturally expecting shit to get real sometime before midnight. He steps inside the bar a bit warily, glancing around.

...crap. There are people here.

Whether he wants to admit it or not (pro tip: he won't. Not ever) it's kind of nice having people at a birthday party instead of a wake/funeral/apocalypse and in spite of his crankiness, he grins a little.

"Tater tots? So help me if you tell me you want to smack my ass, I'm going to beat you."

It's all in good humor though. He appreciates it, Sam. Really.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Sam says innocently. "I just thought it'd be nice for you to have a birthday, for a change. Look, I got you a beer!"

He hands him a cold one, grinning.

There's some wordless grumbling at Sam and some glaring. He's not entirely sure he believes the innocent act. He could use the beer though.

Considering the day he's had, he's cautious but it's beer. He takes a long sip of it.

"Yeah sure. You're a freakin' angel. Take that however you want, Dude."

Because the angels they know are dicks.

"Yeah, thanks." Sam looks at him skeptically. And then he's hugging Dean, because he thinks he can get away with it. He doesn't touch his ass, though.

"Happy birthday, man," he said. Dean deserved a birthday.

Sam can get away with it. Probably anytime but particularly on days like this. Dean hugs him back, patting his shoulder and squeezing tightly for just a moment.

"Thanks, Sam." He glances around the room before looking back to Sam. "For all of this."

It's been almost damn normal and considering how his last birthday went...it's very appreciated.

"You deserve it," Sam says, with a twinkle in his eye that means maybe he means the prank. But really, Sam's just not ready to give up on birthdays yet. Maybe Christmas, okay. But his last birthday hadn't gone all that well, and that's ending right here. "Kinda weird, you know?" he asks, turning slightly to take in the small crowd. "Us having friends."

Yeah, it occurred to him that he meant the prank. Dean likes that he's not ready to give up on birthdays. It's a Sam sort of thing, not give up hope.

Dean glances around the room and then back to Sam before nodding. "Yeah...it is kinda weird. Not hating it though."

There's not a little relief in Sam's smile. He hadn't fucked this up. "In fact," he hazards, taking his own fortifying sip of beer, "you seem pretty... happy here."

Dean frowns a bit considering it. "I don't hate this place. I guess I ought to but home is waiting when ever we get out of here so...I don't see the point."

Besides, even with Mary gone, Sam is here and he's still Sam. That's worth a lot to Dean.

"There's often not a lot of point to how we feel," Sam points out, but it's unnecessary. "But... yeah. I mean..." He looks down, toying with his bottle. "Never thought I'd see Jess again."

Stephen decides he has a few minutes to stop in after work. Dean's a friends, after all. He finds him in the bar and gives him a friendly shoulder-clap. (No ass-slaps immanent, sorry bro.) "Happy birthday, man."

Dean would rather not have the slap on the ass. Thanks Stephen.

"Hey. Thanks. Glad you could come, Dude. You need a beer?"

"I'm good for the moment, thanks. Besides," he says with a laugh, "you're the one everyone's supposed to be buying drinks for."

Dean shrugs a little at that. "Hey, you wanna buy me a drink, I'm good with it."
