When; Shortly after Jack is 'well.' (by his standards.)
Rating; PG 13
Characters; Jack Harkness and Mercy Thompson
Summary; Sometimes it just takes a hit in the head to realize what's obvious.
Log;
As much as he loved Ianto and Mercy, he really hadn't been too far off when he'd told Rose and several others that they'd have him drowned in tea and soup. He appreciated their care and, considering he wasn't used to being sick,he'd needed the help. However, he was still Captain Jack and he needed his space; being cooped up for so long never sat well with him...especially since he'd usually be healed from whatever had knocked him down and back on his feet in no time.
That was why he'd gone to a roof. Not the highest one in the city but certainly higher than what his house could provide. After he'd stood there for a little while, admiring the view, he pulled out his network device and set up a video call; he knew Ianto wouldn't question his absence, but he didn't want Mercy to worry if she went to check on him and found he wasn't there.
"Mercy? Just wanted to let you know I stepped out for a bit. Shouldn't be too long."

She wanted to yell at him to back away, but he was so close to the edge now that she was afraid if she distracted him, he could go right over.

"I can keep my balance, Mercy. Look, I'll be home within the hour, I just needed some fresh-"
Of course he'd get too cocky. Too comfortable. His boot hit the edge of the ledge instead of the middle and he couldn't find the momentum to throw himself back to the roof. The device dropped from his hand to land on the roof while the captain went over the side; only stopping himself from a very deadly drop by catching onto the ledge with his hand.

Then she was screaming his name and scrambling up from her seat as if running to - wherever he was - could somehow have stopped him from going over the edge. "Jack! Oh God, oh God, please!"
She hated to hear His name used casually - and she was sure Jack was amused that she knelt by the bed each night to say her prayers - but this was anything but casual. "Oh God, oh God, oh God, please. Please, I'll do anything."

Reaching up, Jack used his good arm to grab hold of the edge and worked to grab the inside of the ledge so he had better leverage to pull himself up. After a moment of struggling, he was able to get his torso over the edge and then the rest of him.
One hand a little bloody, the other scraped and his right arm aching, the captain decided it really wasn't so bad. He'd been through worse. Sighing, he picked up the device in his better hand. "Mercy? Mercy it's fine, calm down. I'm fine."

Once he'd gotten back to the beach house he tried to sneak in the back so that he could get down to the basement before Mercy could see his injuries.

There she did one of the two things she always did when she was stressed. Cleaned. And since she'd already cleaned every room in the house (barring Ianto's bedroom and bathroom) to within an inch of its life since the awkwardness at the house started, she was left cleaning the only room that was left - her own bedroom.
And if that would make it easier for her to pack things up to leave later, well, maybe it would.
She caught Jack trying to sneak in the back door as she brought a bag of random garbage out and stopped for a moment to assess his injuries visually and through smell.
She shook her head and turned on her heel to go back to her room.

"I'm sorry, I just wanted a bit of fresh air, that's all. It's not like I died or anything."

She shoved a loose strand of hair off her face, trying to keep her voice steady. "You are Not Immortal Anymore. If you do something crazy reckless like that and you die, this time you stay dead. For good, Jack. Or maybe here you're lucky and you come back City dead, but you die."
She had to look away then, shoving her hands in her pockets to try and hide the trembling. "And you're not alone now. Not anymore. If something happened to you - Maybe you don't want to hear it, but I love you, you idiot, and if something happened I'm not sure I could take it."
"And if... if that's not enough - if I'm not enough - then think about Ianto. He loves you and I know you love him. I was here when you came back after losing him, I saw how that destroyed you. Do you want to do that to him?"
She stared at him another moment, fighting tears and anger and more emotion than she knew how to contain. "I know you need to be free and do crazy things, that's who you are - so... walk on all the roofs you want, do whatever you need to do, but just don't be stupid about it. Don't do that to us - to him."
In her mind she was already taking herself out of the equation. Her heart? Couldn't quite manage it yet.

But it had carried over and he hadn't considered the full implications of what that meant. He was just as breakable here as he was being the only mortal man on an immortal planet.
And this wasn't home. There were people who cared about him here. And he cared about them.
He stepped forward and pulled her into a hug with his good arm, pressing his cheek to her hair.
"I'm sorry. You're right." He wanted to tell her he loved her and Ianto and spill all of that emotion out, but the words wouldn't come. Maybe they never would...he'd have to find an alternative.
