Lux was decorated and ready to go. It was just waiting a certain birthday girl and her friends.

"It is, isn't it?" Tosh agreed, to both statements, as she licked a bit of whipped cream off her finger. "Ianto was so sly, he had me thinking he wanted to bake something for Jack. We even made a Devil's Food cake and everything, just so he could keep up his ruse."

"That's pretty intense," he chuckled. "Remind me to never get on Ianto's bad side, he's quite the determined guy."

"Oh he is, you don't ever want to underestimate Ianto's ability to get done what he wants to get done," Tosh agreed. "But that determination got him on our team, so I'm glad for it."

"Everybody on your team is great," he said with a smile. "What's this?" he held up a cherry.

"They are, aren't they?" A nod, with a hint of wistfulness for the missing Owen, as she looked out at the crowd. Then her attention was focused on Luke again.

"Oh, that's a cherry. Might have a pit, so be careful, though I imagine they've probably been pitted before being put on top of a cake. They're a bit tart, that's why I like them."

He ate it, finding no pit inside.

"Weird," he said after, eyebrows raising. "I don't think I've ever tasted anything quite like that."

"Good, yeah?" Tosh daintily fished one off her own piece of cake and offered it to him. "You should see the trees they grow on, just gorgeous flowers when they're in bloom. And cherry blossoms carry an important symbolism in Japan, they're meant to represent the transience of life."

"That sounds very beautiful," he told her, imagining. He wondered if he'd seen anything like what she was describing. It was hard for him to come up with mental images for a lot of vegetation.

"Maybe there are some in the gardens at Xanadu," she mused. "I'll see if there are, and show you if I find some. They usually lose their blooms all at the same time, so it's like this snowfall of flowers."

"We'll have to go look sometime. It sound like something I'd enjoy seeing. What are they called, in Japanese, I feel like I've heard it before... Sakura?" he was thinking of the two girls he'd met so far with that name. "It's like the name 'Lily', huh?"

"Sakura, exactly," Tosh nodded. "And it is name, there are quite a few girls' names in Japanese that come from flowers. Like Lily, and Rose."

"That's pretty," he said. "Apparently my name means 'light bringer' on Earth, which is kind of... funny, I guess."

"Probably in Japanese then, your name would be maybe something like...Hikaru," Tosh mused. "Mine just means 'intelligent child', nothing flowery or romantic. But why do you think 'light bringer' is funny?"

"Hikaru," he repeated, seeming amused. "And.. well it's a bit literal, don't you think?" and here he seemed a little sheepish, running a hand over his hair. "I'm the only Jedi of the light left."

Tosh gently bumped her shoulder into his. "Nothing wrong with having a name that suits, you know. In some cultures, that's exactly why people choose the names they do for their children -- in hopes that their choices will be prophetic."

"Mmm."

He took a bite of cake, realizing the conversation was starting to veer in a direction that might bring up his parentage. He didn't know who named him - maybe his mother, maybe Obi-Wan. And he didn't really want to think about Amidala. Not yet.

"Have you ever thought about having kids?"

While it was probably a completely logical route for the conversation to take, Luke's question caught Tosh completely off-guard. She turned and stared at him for a moment, blinking, and then shook her head.

"Not in a long while. Once, when I was a lot younger, but things just didn't work out that way."

"I never really thought about it until I got involved in the war," he mused. "And now I realize I'd love kids. It's just one of those things, though. I'll be a solider and a Knight forever. Not exactly time for that sort of thing."

"I don't think that's true, though," Tosh said quietly, looking mostly down at her plate. "I mean, a lot of soldiers have families. My parents both were in the military, and they found time. If you want kids, you should, I think. You'd be really good with them, I bet."

"I love kids. I'm not even really sure why. When I was growing up I didn't have the patience at all."

He smiled, tilting his head, thinking about something for a moment.

"What's this season like, now, on Earth?"

"A lot of people don't I guess, when they're young. Probably too much going on for themselves. Ianto's wonderful with children, I hope he has some someday."

Tosh shook her head, bemused at Luke's hopping from subject to subject. "Depends on where you are. Earth has a variable climate, so in the northern hemisphere it would summer but in the southern it'd be winter. And the closer to the equator you get, the less that even matters." She looked over at Luke and smiled back. "But in Cardiff we'd be having probably the best weather of the year. Quite mild for what a lot of people think of as summer -- probably not much over 20 Celcius. It's always a bit on the rainy side, but less so in the summer. Everything would be already fully bloomed and growing, so it's quite green."

Topic surfing was a habit of his. He knew Tosh would notice - skipping place to place, trying to feel out something comfortable.

"Huh. I'm jealous. We had one season on Tatooine. Hot." He laughed.

She had an idea what he was doing, and felt a little bad that his previous attempt hadn't been what he'd hoped for. But it hit too close to things Tosh was still trying to reconcile herself with.

"So I hear," she replied, with a little grin. "I've never been to the desert. Been to the Himalayas, which is a huge snowy mountain chain. But I haven't really traveled all that much."

It was all just random things - he didn't feel particularly awkward. It was easy enough, and something he should probably use for diplomacy instead of chatting with friends, but oh well.

"I never thought I'd ever leave Tatooine, much less see the worlds I've seen. Or here, even! Maybe someday I'll have time to enjoy the different planets instead of... you know, running through shooting things, basically."

"Well, think of the running through shooting things as a sort of trial run. Better than a travel brochure, yeah?"

Tosh didn't mind having diplomatic tactics used on her, although mostly it was that she didn't really notice it. Leia did the same at times, and Tosh generally just chalked it up to her usual lack of finesse when it came to conversation.

"Where's someplace you've heard about that you'd like to go, but haven't had the chance?"
