With this in mind, Kate catches up to Hari as she weaves in and out of the dancing couples and attempts to push a cup of cola into the other girl's hand with a light warning: "Don't drink the punch."

"Why not?" she asks. The truth is she doesn't even like punch, but...really, she doesn't get it. Why...not...drink the punch? Shifting a little, skirt of her dress rustling under her fingertips as she fidgets, she glances around a little before her gaze returns to Kate. She likes Kate, more than most people, and Kate is also one of the few people Hari talks to on a regular basis, even if it is usually just for class.

"I've seen it. I've heard it. Trust me, you don't want any of the punch." A dire warning, she makes it sound like, as if Kate didn't have a full cup of the stuff herself a few minutes ago. Okay, two cups, but who's counting?
no subject
"Oh, thank you," she nods once and then, "I don't like it very much anyway," and a short laugh, as Kate is a person she knows it isn't bothersome to laugh in front of. Vaguely recalling the brunette having mentioned something about escorts, Hari notes that there is no one mingling about and hovering as if waiting for Kate, but she does not bring attention to it. It's just one of those things taken in while observing the big picture. Hari herself has been asked for a dance and that was all well and good, polite, a little odd, but mostly fine. Beyond that she would be happy going without another offer the whole night, but she is glad she came to the event at all.
"Are you having fun?" she asks, curious, peering quite openly, but not quite obtrusive.

There's a little bit of a wistful tone to Kate's voice, one that tells a story of a boy she liked once upon a time who never left her head. She ever so often wonders what ever happened to that Eli kid who her dad forbade her from seeing because he was from the wrong side of the tracks. Translation: his family was from the working class and no daughter of Derek Bishop would 'stoop that low'. She wishes he was here tonight so she wouldn't feel awkward hugging the side of the courtyard with a cup as a partner.
"Anyway, what about you?"

What about you?
...
Well.
Her response is, if possible, more non-committal than that qualifier allows for.
"I didn't really come here to have fun, but it is a very nice idea." It is the same as writing off things, turning aside. She doesn't mean to be awkward and doesn't really think of herself that way, but her brother would point out to her that normal people could answer that question with a simple yes or no. Hari isn't exactly a yes or no kind of person though. Is that a problem? Back home, it sort of is, but she would argue it isn't her fault that her new environment suits itself to ambiguity only at its own convenience, and not hers. That home however isn't a part of this reality, and so rather than her mind going quite that deep into it, she simply thinks that the one dance she had was good to have. Why? Well...
"I danced once, as agreed." Yes, this is implying it was good because she said she would do it, and having met that commitment, feels justified in leaving whenever she feels like now.
Though, surprise of all surprises, she doesn't mind standing here with Kate. She kind of likes it. Friends. Sort of. Right? Sort of. That works for Hari.

"As agreed? Why are you making it sound like you signed a contract for it?" There's a laugh behind her words. Hopefully, Hari can hear it.

"Also because of that dance, which isn't a contract," she does laugh now. "Although I would have made good on it, if it was," she adds a bit wryly, some point of humor in there as well, however ambiguous. "It's a habit," she confesses. "A dance offered is to be accepted, generally, at Home," is the brief explanation. What goes unsaid is, especially if she is asked, because it just doesn't happen often. It's not that she cares for her own social well being, but it does make her guardians worry less if she appears to be fitting in. Lady Amelia does love her society, and is kind with it, unlike others. Hari tries to be mindful of that, or did, when she was there. Here, it seems the drill has stuck, if tonight is any indication.

"But what if the guy who asked you to dance has onion breath, two left feet and doesn't shower? What then?" Kate always has to consider the worst possible outcome of a situation. It's one of her skills. "And what if he has trolling hands? Hmm?"
no subject
"Well, he did not," she arches a brow, "For which I am now grateful," in regards to the breath and lack of showering, and then she steps backward--metaphorically--again as she pauses, frowning. "Trolling?"
Sorry Kate. This disconnect? It's a recurring thing. But maybe she's used to that by now.
