Bff times
"Teddy won't have a problem with it?" she questions before draining her cup, knowing damn well that if Teddy did, she'll tell him where to stick his problem.
[ooc: Be back in a bit. Need food.]
Bff times
"I don't think so," Billy says with a smile. "Besides before I owe him a dance, I owe you one, I think," he explains. "You've never let me down, after all." Each and every time Billy had been beat up Kate was always there, sometimes even to stop it when she managed to see it in progress.
Bff times
She just shrugs at him, knowing that they've both never let each other down. Billy was there when her mom died, just as much as she was there when the bullies got to him. It's just something that happened and she wouldn't have it any other way.
Placing the plastic cup on a nearby table, Kate turns to Billy and warns him in a joking tone, "These shoes cost a fortune. Step on my feet and die."
Bff times
He smiles a little. "Well, then, you should know better than to buy such fancy shoes. You know that I can't always control my feet." This much isn't a lie as much as it's a joke. Bar Mitzvah lessons had included a whole slew of dance lessons from one of his aunts who thought it was necessary for Billy to know how to dance. Kate had been the unfortunate girl who he practiced with, so he was pretty good at avoiding her feet.
He took her in his arms and holding her at the same distance that he would hold his sister, if he had one, and takes her out onto the dance floor.
Bff times
"Blame my dad. He shipped these overnight when I mentioned the dance. Thanks Dad."
The live band strikes up something akin to an updated waltz. Not her type of music, but it's better than an orchestrated rendition of whatever love song that's popular now. Now that would have taken this dance from a friendly stroll on the dance floor to something much more awkward.
"So," she starts as they begin a nice sway to the rhythm, "I see somebody remembers what Aunt Sara taught him way back when."
Bff times
"Don't I get fancy presents? Hey, dad, where's my fancy guilt gift?" he said, moving her as nicely and as elegantly as he could, which wasn't very much, but it was good enough.
He shrugs a little. "She would be proud. I mean, she'd totally critique me, say something about how it's a shame about how we're not married yet, when are we going to settle down already, and then she'd say that it's so nice I remembered how to dance." He laughs a little, and turns just a little red around the ears. "At least it makes it so I don't look totally stupid around Teddy."
Re: Bff times
"Oh my god. I forgot she was like that. Remember right before your party, she was going on and on to my dad that it was a shame that I was Catholic and not a good Jewish girl because I would make a nice wife for you? I was like twelve and she was playing matchmaker. I thought my dad would kill her."
Kate laughs heartily at the memory, a stark difference from the embarrassment she felt when her father got mad and dragged her out of Billy's house and almost denied her from both the party and her friend. It took a lot of begging from her and a stern look from her mother to get him to relent.
At Billy's last sentence, she leans in, as if she's passing on a deep, dark secret. "I don't think Teddy would be the type to laugh at you if you did anyway. I think he really likes you."
Bff times
He gives her another turn. "Your dad looked so pissed. I thought he was going to go nuclear on my cake. I'm glad you came back, though. The Horah would have been even worse than it already was without you laughing at my shame." The memories were nice ones; embarrassing at the time but they made for good laughs now.
He smiles, and it's sort of sheepish. "You really think so?" He leans back in. "I think I'm...." he trails off. He can't finish that sentence, the words get jammed up somewhere in his throat. "You know." He figures that Kate will know. She always does, somehow.
Bff times
"Sorry I laughed, but you looked like a drunken handicapped penguin, Billy." If he thinks he looks like a monkey tonight, he definitely looked like some sort of zoo animal back then in those early awkward years. She waits until they complete the turn before continuing to speak. "I thought you were going to cry if it wouldn't end soon."
As Billy leans back in to whisper his reply with that sheepish expression, Kate smirks a little. She knows, of course. Kate's not stupid. It was just a matter of time before Billy fell head over heels in love with some other boy. She is, however, capable of an evil streak. "What? Horny? You know, if you want to, I'll lend you my card for a nice room somewhere..."
Bff times
Billy flushed a little. "Yeah, I bet a penguin would be that uncomfortable up in that chair. I'm still not sure how I got over my fear of heights."
He resists smacking her and opts instead to turn a nice, beet red. "Your dad would murder me for not watching you closely enough." Because her dad would never believe that he was the one using the room.
Bff times
She laughs again at the change in Billy's coloring, knowing that her teasing hit home. Not that she wouldn't get the couple a room if they really needed it. Kate'll do anything for the boy she's dancing with right now, even being an accomplice. All he has to do is ask.
"True. And I like you better alive anyway." She's quiet for a moment before she asks her next question right as the song hits a crescendo. "How does it feel?"
Just as Billy knows about her thinking process, she knows that Billy recognizes the question for what it is.
Bff times
"Well, I'm glad," he begins, but at her question he pauses, and a silly, ridiculous looking smile crosses his face. It's goofy and wide and it makes him look about two years younger. "It..." he can't verbalize it, really. "There really aren't the right words. Is that cheesy?"
He feels like he's floating.
Bff times
"Cheesy like macaroni and cheese," she smiles back, reaching up to ruffle his hair. "But it works." Kate will never tell him, but she's a little bit jealous. She can't lie and say that she wouldn't want to ever feel the way Billy feels about Teddy. There's just a lot of issues she needs to work through before getting to that stage with anybody.
Bff times
"At least macaroni and cheese is delicious," he says, the song ending, as he moves her back to the side of the dance floor. He sees the feelings that Kate isn't saying, and he nudges her a little. "You'll find him soon, Kate."
Bff times
"Go on to Teddy before he starts thinking I stole you away," she speaks with a tone that hides the words that say she hopes he's right sooner or later. "I'll see you later."
