Summary; The dance is upon us and the deities have done their very best to light up the Square. Students and staff alike have been invited, date or no date. Those who aren't cursed may still come to take in the decorations, the food, the entertainment, and the merriment... or they can take pictures for blackmail when this is over.

"I want you to like me," Kyle replied. "Isn't that obvious?"

The gentle touch was distracting.

"And I do," he assured Kyle, "but just because of that, it doesn't mean you should let me take advantage of you."

His other hand went on Kyle's shoulder. "So I'm not going to."

"But I invited you to," Kyle protested. "It isn't taking advantage. I said that you could. Don't you want to?"

He started to wonder if he just wasn't attractive to Ianto. It was a dismaying thought.

Ianto was getting frustrated with himself as he couldn't express himself properly. But he wasn't going to let it show and make Kyle think it was aimed at him.

"Yes, but I want to do it properly."

Kyle shook his head. What on earth did 'properly' mean?

"I don't understand," he admitted, ruefully. He was used to knowing exactly what his partners wanted. It's what made him so popular, apart from the good looks and copious amounts of money.

Ianto struggled for the right word. Courting would probably sound old fashioned, and dating sounded too teenagerish.

"You know. Going out for coffee, dinner, going to watch films."

"Yes, that's usually the first half of the night," Kyle agreed, wondering what Ianto was getting at. Did he want coffee first?

"No, no." Ianto ran a hand through his hair, and then tried again.

"Over a period of time."

"Why?"

Ianto hoped the way he was rubbing Kyle's knuckles was helping.

"So we can get to know each other."

Kyle laughed, more comfortable with that old line.

"Yes, exactly. So let's go someplace private and do that."

If there was a wall, Ianto would have banged his head off of it.

"Dating. I mean like that."

"That's what I mean too," Kyle said, becoming a little frustrated. He didn't understand where the disconnect was coming from.

"I didn't think you wanted to just be a one-night stand."

Ianto was beginning to wonder if maybe it was a cultural gap.

"But you're not supposed to sleep together before you even have one date."

Kyle stared at him. "That's...what dating is."

Ianto's eyebrows furrowed.

"Sleeping with people straight away?"

"Well, yes." Kyle squirmed, suddenly uncertain in the face of Ianto's incredulity.

"...Isn't it?"

But then Ianto was beginning to wonder himself. He never had been one to jump straight between the sheets, and the people he'd been with had never minded.

"Um. Not for me... so far?"

"Huh. It's always been that way for me." From his very first boyfriend and onwards. Kyle couldn't really wrap his head around the idea of dating someone who wasn't expecting you to offer your body to them at the end of the night.

After that, Ianto sort of wanted to hold Kyle, but he wasn't sure if it would be welcomed, so an arm went around his waist instead.

"I've generally found it lasts better long term..."

Kyle blinked hard. "You want something long term? Really?"

He leaned willingly into the arm around his waist.

He would the arm a little tighter.

"I'm willing to entertain it as a possibility."

"Oh," he said, flushing red at the unexpected news and a little at a loss for words.

"I don't know if I'm any good at it," he confessed finally. "The waiting, I mean. You might get bored."

Giving up, Ianto pulled Kyle in for a hug.

"I wouldn't get bored."

Now it was Kyle's turn to stiffen in nervousness. He hadn't been hugged often before, it wasn't the kind of touching his partners usually indulged in or encouraged, and he wasn't sure what was expected of him as a response.

He relaxed after a moment though, resting his head on Ianto's shoulder.
