It hadn't occurred to Clef to have the party at the beach - probably because it was still a little chilly yet, but that's presumably why Fuu had rented the hut. He still smiled to think of how meticulously she had planned it, and right under the noses of everyone else. She had gotten the decorations together, rented the hut, and sent out invitations even while Umi and Clef were still unable to decide where and how this party was happening. Not just that, but all of Umi and Shin's cooking for the party had somehow been transported here. It was absolutely perfect, he thought, and now that he considered it he knew that this was exactly what Umi would have wanted - whether she realized it at the time or not. She loved the beach, so it was entirely appropriate to have her party there, regardless of the season.

Clef, for his part, wasn't much of a party person. He made sure to give his well-wishes to all three of the birthday people, but aside from that mostly stayed on the sidelines, ready to help Fuu with her hostess duties should the need arise. Seeing all three of the girls so happy made even him a little more cheerful than usual, though, and even as he lurked in his little out-of-the-way corner there was plainly a slight smile on his face.

"Well... I didn't think I'd ever say this, but... Clef's considerably less grumpy." And most of the time the Guru was only strict when he had to. But Umi was letting her thoughts divert from Eclipse far too much. With a bit of luck Raenef's tutor would get to enjoy the party even a little, especially at seeing Raenef enjoy it himself. "Did Eclipse recover from his injuries alright?"

"Yeah, Eclipse is definitely more so..." Raenef laughed at that "I thought he didn't know how to even smile at first"

When Umi asked about Eclipse's injuries, he just nodded "Mm, yeah he did. By the time I we got back to the apartment he was okay. Demons heal pretty quickly actually"

"Truth be told? When he did smile when we talked the first time... I actually thought he looked a bit creepy." In part she still believed that. But she was slowly getting over the first bad impression. As long as Eclipse cared for Raenef he'd be an okay guy in Umi's book. She shook her head and smiled herself. "But I'm glad he's alright now. He'll have lots of time to practice and learn to smile more, now you're both stuck here together."

If The City let them, that was. Umi planned to do her best to keep it from bothering them.

"He did?" Raenef was a bit curious about that, but he took it as a good thing, even though Umi said she found it creepy. "But anyway, I'm glad he's alright too"

"He'll have time to learn to take things easy, I bet." Umi cocked an eyebrow at the tall demon's back, then crossed her arms at the idea there was really quite a lot for Eclipse to come to terms with. Especially when it came to sharing The City with humans. "Can you believe he made a fuss when I told him about getting medical assistance?? Jeez. At least he didn't sound so peeved when I told him Fuu could help him."

"Well I guess I can see why he'd do that...if he was going to heal without it" Raenef looked in thought for a moment at the her mention of Eclipse not being as mad at Fuu "Really? I don't really get that myself. Maybe it was something she said to him?"

"When they chatted that once during that crazy curse with the visitors, you mean? Could be..." Umi's face seemed deep in thought. Truth be told, Eclipse had all but stated he approved of Fuu! "Right, so he doesn't remember, but... I Wonder what exactly did they talk about back then."

"Yeah, maybe it was then-- or something she said to him when he arrived here?" Raenef said, he seemed just as confused, since he wasn't too sure what they talked about either.

"I'd say I'll ask him about it, but I doubt he'd tell me anything." Not after the little exchange she and Eclipse had had upon his arrival, at least. Talk about first impressions that stay with you...

"I could poke Fuu for information, though!"

"Yeah, it'd probably be best to ask Miss Fuu about it or I can ask him for you?" Raenef briefly glanced over at Eclipse as he suggested asking. He didn't think asking Eclipse about it would be too much of a problem for himself, anyway.

"Only if you feel like daring his horrible temper, jeez." Umi sighed exasperatedly. It had to be the second time in her life that she encountered someone as pissy and haughty as Raenef's mentor. Yet... looking at the guy standing there, isolated...

Urgh.

Umi made a face, her tone growing strained. As if she was talking without moving her lips at all, she added: "Though that's actually a good idea. Look at him. He's scaring everyone off! He'll hands down spend the whole party on his own if you don't go to him!"

"He's always yelling at me for something-- I guess I should be used to that" Raenef sighed. Though on the upside, it would give him some chance to practice saying something Demon Lord-like to Eclipse.

"Yeah, you're right about that. I guess I should go over there" Raenef laughed slightly at her mention of Eclipse scaring everyone off, because it was true. Eclipse didn't even like being there at all because of all the humans, so Umi was right when she said he'd probably spend it by himself.

He was considering doing what Umi suggested, when he remembered that he had something to give Umi. Birthdays had gifts, right? He wasn't exactly sure what to exactly get Umi because it was his first time doing anything of the sort, so hopefully the advice he got on this was right, and it was something she'd like.

"Oh, Miss Umi! Before I go over to him though, I have something to give you"

Umi had been about to remark she'd be quite inclined to giving Eclipse a sample of what getting a good yelling at was like, when Raenef's next words distracted her away from her temper. In fact all her anger died and the annoyed expression on her face faded underneath a warm smile.

He actually...? Oh, he absolutely had.

"Birthday partners are exempt of gift-giving, you know?" She told him in jest, sweetly. Boy, more sweetly than planned. He'd really become like a little brother to her, hadn't he? "But I got something for you, too. So. This time's as good as any, right?"

He could tell that Umi said that as a joke, given that she'd gotten him something as well, so he just smiled back at her and nodded"Yeah, now is good time for that"

He had a box which he took out of his pocket that had her gift. One of the workers at the store told him that girls liked jewelry so that was mainly what his gift was. This was the first time he'd even bought something for someone in the first place too. Before living in the castle, stealing was something he had to do most of his life to actually get things because he never had the money, so he wanted to get this right.

He reached out and handed it to her "Well this is for you"

Umi's smile was pure accomplishment and happiness. This meant a lot more to her than simply getting a birthday present from a good friend. It meant she'd made the whole birthday idea really work for Raenef. That he'd embraced the concept even if he hadn't known a lot about it before. That was enough to make Umi feel she'd done the right thing. Whatever complaints Eclipse may have about THAT.

She accepted the little package with a little nod of gratefulness. Then produced one of her own out of her pocket, which she handed to her friend in turn.

"Thanks a lot, Raenef. And... this one here, from me to you." She'd debated what to get him for so long she'd almost panicked when she'd had difficulties deciding. But in the end that was settled: Raenef has been told for far too long that he shouldn't make friends, only terrorize people.

The best token for how much Umi wished to change that was the friendship necklace (http://i46.tinypic.com/2eoab8z.jpg) her roommate would find once he unwrapped his birthday gift.

Of course he'd embraced the concept, after all, he found the human concept of birthdays really interesting and fun too, much like the other events he'd learnt about since he arrived here.

"Thank you, Miss Umi!" Raenef took the gift from her and smiled and looked at it for a moment, "I can open it now, right?"

[ooc; I know, right? asdfgh I couldn't decide between them both, so you can pick if Umi gets one or both of them]

"You be my guest! I'll do the same with mine if that's alright." She was in fact getting itchy fingers about the small package. It felt special. Mostly because it came from Raenef -- the very first birthday present he ever gave somebody! -- but also because of something else. A little hunch that told Umi she was downright going to love this. "Ready? Go."

"Ah, okay then! Let's both open them together" Raenef was really curious as to what Umi actually got him, but whatever she did get him, he would be happy with it anyway.

He starts to unwrap the box revealing the friendship necklace inside. At first, he doesn't quite get it, but upon seeing the meaning behind the necklace, he just smiles, he wasn't really sure what to say.

Disregarding her own cue, Umi tarried before opening her own present just to have a better look at Raenef's reaction. She smiled in turn at the understanding she saw on her friend's face. "That's so you can choose a really special friend and give them half the necklace. And you keep the other half. That way you'll always keep each other in mind when you wear it."

So for now, task done, she focused on her own gift. "Let's see, here." She muttered, centering all her attention in unwrapping the package carefully.

When she was done and discovered the lovely pieces of jewelry inside, she held her breath. "These are... so beautiful!"
