Log, complete
When; Monday 18th, afternoon
Rating; PG
Characters; Aya (
onceaweiss) and Umi (
soulofocean)
Summary; After breaking free from the Saw trap where they were stuck together these two decide to be the worst hospital patients in the history of The City.
Log;
They'd told her he was alright. That he was evolving fine -- extremely well for the kind of wounds he'd taken. But ask her if their word was enough. Umi felt each hour she spent stuck in that bed was an eternity. The Network device she'd all but bullied the medical staff into letting her have back wasn't doing much to fix this. Instead it kept her restless, delivering a parade of awful news from that nightmarish weekend. Hearing Aya's voice had helped a lot, but it still wasn't the same. The Water Knight understood that if he felt as weak and wobbly as she did it might well take a while for them to see each other in person like she needed them to.
The nurse wasn't cooperating even under the threat of getting soaked, chilled to the bone, or even yelled at. That awful curse had kept Fuu away since Sunday night, and in any case Umi doubted her sister could have done much about the situation.
...But she swore that if it took more than an hour longer all bets were off. She didn't care who she had to coerce into it. She WAS going to check on Aya even if she had to fight the entire hospital security to drag herself to his room. All caution be damned. After that hell of a weekend she needed to be sure of this more than she needed any further medical attention.

So what if her words were in jest. Aya might be able to tell what was behind them. He was close enough to see how Umi immediately assumed the demeanor she would were she about to face one of the monsters she usually fought instead of just a bunch of inconsiderate medics. Her jaw was set, her eyes were stormy. She'd have hold onto him a little tighter had she owned any more strength for that, in a very See if you can take him away fashion.
The ruckus that started down the hall made it clear it wouldn't take long for them to find Aya.
"Let them come." Yes, that voice sounded very much like the one she used in battle, only with a touch of sarcasm. "Let's see how long until they figure out where you went..."
no subject
He'd see to that.
"Considering how we've been talking about each other, I don't think it's going to take them that long to figure out I walked myself over here."
no subject
It wasn't something she was ready to forgive and IV or not, post-surgery rest or not, there was going to be a lot of violence involved if they tried to gainsay their decision.
"I'm ready to deal with them. If yesterday's thing didn't make enough of an impression maybe they need a reminder."
no subject
And sure enough, a nurse ran over and popped her head in before shouting out into the hallway that she'd found him.
"And what did I say?"
no subject
There came the army of jerks she'd had to deal with earlier. Say, she even recognized most of these faces. Umi wondered if these were the lucky people who'd been shoved with looking after the "problem patients" until they got rid of Aya and her for good.
A single icy glare had the staff stop dead at their door.
"Timely, people. You can just start making this room available for two."
no subject
Naturally there were some protests. This wasn't his room. He should go back.
He shook his head slowly.
"No. I would like to be where I can keep an eye on Umi."
no subject
Just go figure, these people believed they were still entitled to keeping her on edge! Umi couldn't tell what was more vexing, the complaints about the obvious solution to their lodging problem or the way the doctors were conferencing among themselves in scandalized tones of voice.
"You heard him. I want to keep an eye on him too." Just so that the whole thing wasn't left to sound like Aya would be the only one doing the looking after. She let go of him for the first time since he'd arrived just to cross her arms. "Think about it! It's not THAT much of a pain, right? And it'll spare you the need to be on constant watch to make sure I'M not the one who wanders off to see him next!"
no subject
"You'll keep us both in our beds and we will recover faster to be out of your hair."
They'd certainly be able to rest knowing that they could see each other. That was saying something when it came to the two of them. Perhaps he should have said Umi was his 'sister' sooner.
no subject
...Really...
Umi wondered if her peeved stance had faltered. She shouldn't have felt her heart skip a beat, then start racing again at twice its normal pace at Aya... so openly... And even with what she knew about his real sister...
Her raise of eyebrows at the staff made her next words almost redundant. "See? Doesn't that make perfect sense to you?"
It was silly. She was Aya's sister. He was her brother. Blood didn't matter when feelings were involved. And even so, they'd both shed as much together during that curse to already consider each other a blood sibling.
no subject
Like he would Aya if he could see her...
One of the doctors gave the order to start fixing the room up to include another bed and he looked at Umi.
"I think we won."
no subject
It didn't matter how it was done. Not even if she still wanted to yell at these people. Umi knew she'd finally be getting sleep that night.
no subject
"I don't need one though." That darker undertone was very intentional. And it helped to get them to move faster. Which was what he'd been expecting them to do.
no subject
"Of course you don't need it. And I still have my magic too, in case things get difficult."
She nodded at the window, where little telltale cracks from the intensely low temperature the poor glass had endured still remained. Sure enough, the staff bringing the extra bed in shivered.
no subject
"I think I'm going to be asked to move over soon."
no subject
Not that Umi would notice until she thought back to the moment -- if ever she did -- but she might have dropped the bad, crossed girl with icy magic act just to look at up Aya with a touch of bewilderment for just a beat.
Then she smiled brightly. "Hey, it's not like you're going too far."
no subject
Waiting, he finally got up when the bed was in place and went to get in it. Right away, he was fussed over and covered with a blanket, pillows adjusted, IV put in. It was ridiculous really.
"I think I'm comfortable now."
no subject
Well. Now she could at least guarantee them that unless they made an awful slip they wouldn't be having any complaints to make about her behavior.
She smiled at Aya in a way that implied she understood his annoyed mood. "Nothing like a hospital bed with stone-hard pillows and needles up your arm, huh?"
no subject
But, he hadn't been able to help the joke. He was feeling better now that he could actually see how well Umi was doing. It put Aya's mind at ease. Just what he needed to help him recover faster.
no subject
She gave it a good wait until the doctors and nurses were reluctantly out the door -- with apologies, at that: Umi knew she shouldn't feel so vindicated about so little, and YET -- then she turned to Aya with a conspiring look and whispered: "Ken promised to bring me potato chips in his next visit!"
no subject
More than a nice change. Aya had greatly appreciated having something that wasn't hospital food. Something he'd never been fond of.
no subject
She lay back against the pillows she'd just ranted about and found them cushier than she remembered.
"Then we can have real food and make it up to ourselves for all this mess. I feel we'll all need that. I--!" She sighed heavily, immediately regretting it as her side started to hurt. "Jeez, it hadn't been this tough in a long while. October lives up to the stupid hype."
no subject
"At least people won't forget that it is still October."
Which wasn't exactly a good thing but there wasn't much they could do about it. Something he hated rather passionately.

...Of course she couldn't guess what Aya was thinking, but the tone of his voice helped her realize something specific had troubled him. She smiled from where she lay. "Look at me: I'm resting now. Thanks to you."
