Summary; Theo runs into Meyer in the underground... doing some not so nice things ... either of them.

The Underground always held an appeal to Theo. He liked being around creatures of the night. He also found a very nice business in retrieving magical items that probably shouldn't be hanging around. It was a Thing he decided to do after his knife got stolen.

Currently, he was wiping said knife off of a body. An undead of some sort - one he'd never seen before except in the City - was trying to sell some cursed items to people without saying they were cursed. Theo decided to stop that sort of business. The creature didn't appreciate it. Undead really shouldn't attack necromancers. Especially demi-god necromancers.

Hearing footsteps behind him, he spun up, pointing the knife at whomever it was behind him. "If you're looking to buy or sell, he's not interested," he said lightly.

"At some point, I very likely will get married. Statistically speaking, it's overwhelmingly likely."

And that's probably telling in it of itself. He doesn't necessarily want to get married, but he's accepted that he will.

"Statistically speaking? How... romantic. I didn't realize there were statistics for this sort of thing."

Well, at least, in Theo's time people aren't as likely to get married if they don't want to.

"There are statistics for everything, if you know how to calculate them -- and I don't think anyone would ever accuse me of being a romantic."

"You're probably right." Pause. "Statistically speaking."

What? It was there.

"I dunno. If my father can pull off romantic, you probably could."

His father's idea of romantic involved eloping with his brother's fiancee.

"There's a difference between going through the motions that most people find traditionally romantic and truly valuing it."

And how did they end up talking about this in the Underground over a dead body? That's one thing he can say for Theo -- their conversations are never boring.

"I wouldn't call going through the motions romantic though."

It's hard to say. Theo certainly isn't sure. It probably doesn't help that for Theo this isn't an awkward place to hold such a conversation.

"It isn't. And that's why I'm not particularly romantic, though I am, of course, capable of faking it if I need to."

He's capable of faking just about anything. There're probably a fair few people here who really have no idea what he's truly like. Theo, though, probably has a better sense than most, especially running into him down here.

"I imagine you'd need to find the right person then, to not fake it."

Theo has a decent idea of what Meyer is like, or so he thinks. It's probably not as deep as Al's is, but he knows that Meyer isn't as nice as he seems.

"Yes, and once again, finding the 'right' person seems to be a statistical improbability, if not an impossibility. If there are, what, five or six billion people on this earth -- though significantly less in the City -- and many subscribe to the idea of finding 'one true love'..."

He shrugs, as though it's all beyond him.

"Bah. I never did buy into the idea of one true love. Too Disney for my taste."

"Disney? Undoubtedly this is another reference from your time period that I'm aware of. There seem to be a preponderance of them."

And sometimes it's downright frustrating. He likes to know everything, and it's just impossible to know enough about the future.

"They're an entertainment company, they make very popular movies and often times do retellings of popular stories but with happy endings and people falling in love with each other after only knowing the other for a half a day." He waves an annoyed hand.

"That sounds like intolerable, sappy drivel."

Well, he's certainly not one to mince words. To be fair, he hadn't much cared for those fairy tales that trumpeted the importance of true love, either.

"Yes, but a billion dollar industry intolerable, sappy drivel. I mean they've managed to ensnare one of the most murder happy little girls I've ever met."

Theo has to admit that while they're many things, profitable is pretty much at the top.

"Well, I suppose if something's successful enough to become a billion dollar industry, there must be some value to it, if only its remarkable ability to turn a profit."

He'll watch Disney movies someday in his future. He'll probably dislike them then, too, but admire the profit margins. That, at least, is something he can very much appreciate.

"Little girls are very profitable. And that sounded horribly wrong."

Theo's not very fond of them. He's seen them and he'll end up watching more when he has little girls too. Because that's what good dads do.

"I'm sure they provide an excellent market for all kinds of ridiculous toys and products, yes."

This just makes him dread having children even more, and he's certain that it'll happen someday. And now he's imagining Theo with children, and very slowly raising an eyebrow at the mental image.

"Lots of pink things." And he shudders briefly. "At least in my time."

Theo, if Meyer remembers, had returned to the City uncertain if his wife was pregnant or not.

If it helps matters, Theo can't imagine Meyer with kids either.

"Lots of frills and bows, in mine. Largely..."

He looks down at the body again, then shakes his head.

"Perhaps we should continue this conversation, fascinating as it is, at another time. I still have business to attend to."

"You're right. I suppose I'll see you later."

With that, he gives Meyer a nod and then gestures at the body. It lurches up to its feet, clearly not sentient in any sense of the word, more like a puppet, and follows Theo as he does a lovely disappearing act into the shadows.
