Log;

As far as preparations went, the joint event between the Ouran Host Club Mad Hatter was nothing short of a success. The entire mansion was elaborately decorated, so much so one almost forgot that the place could send shivers down one's spine. As the guests entered, a cascade of rose petals fluttered down on them, reminiscent of the grandiose entrances into Music Room Three back at Ouran Academy. The rich scents of the food the waiters and waitresses served, paired with the strong but sweet liquors and cocktails went to the head while the strains of exotic asian instruments and the tinkling of bells filled the air seemed to aim at the heart.

Something special was bound to happen tonight...

While no one (save Tamaki) could probably see through his nonchalant façade, Kyouya, while very ambitious, wasn't used to being in the spotlight. Whether it was as the youngest of three sons or the "Shadow King" of the Host Club, the majority of his actions were "below the radar" (so to speak).

Speaking to the masses was something Tamaki was more inclined to do, but something Kyouya could easily adjust to. He patiently waited for silence so and addressed them all:

"Fondest greetings to each and every one of you. I am so glad that you could attend this celebration and enjoy this day with Mad Hatter and the Ouran Host Club.

This initial ball is to welcome you to the carnival and all the guests are encouraged to enjoy the refreshments and music. Later on we shall be separated for events on our respective floors, so for the time being please feel free to get to know eachother and mingle.

The Ouran Host Club's members are offering their services as dance partners, so if you are interested in a dance, please notify the host of your choice to be put on their dance card. As always a small fee is required to do so, however the money is going to the support of the Ouran Host Club and future events by our organization.

With that said, please enjoy the ball."

Smiling to himself after an exquisite dance, Fai set off in search of a new partner. He was a graceful dancer--it came with the territory, and he enjoyed it very much. It was also a perfect way to engage another person, catch a hint of their secrets and mannerisms through the twirling steps.

There against a wall was Tsuzuki, looking happy, almost like a puppy in giant rolls of fabric. At least he was enjoying himself. Gliding over, Fai bowed again, watching him with blue eyes.

"We meet again."

The material of his costume was beginning to pull at his throat, tighten around his arms, and ultimately, as pretty as it was, the mask remained uncomfortable. Despite all of that, he really was enjoying himself surrounded by so many people, though having danced very little actually made him anxious. Tsuzuki tried ignoring it, waving at those walking by, bouncing on his feet. The permanent smile on his face must have been infectious because no one had yet to offer otherwise.

At the voice, he blinked, staring into the outline of eyes very familiar to him. Tsuzuki started laughing, still amused with the sounds he actually made. What enchantment.

“I’ve been waiting,” he answered, smooth with the words and calming himself enough to adjust the cloth draping his arm before extending a gloved hand. “Dance?” And he smiled again.

"I'd be delighted," Fai murmured, quite amused that Tsuzuki still had no idea who he was. He toyed with the idea of telling him as he offered him his hand.

He was surprised at Tsuzuki's movements as they twirled around the dance floor. Graceful, strong, flowing--a great natural talent. It was always pleasing to work with a master, in any field, and Fai felt his spirits raise a bit.

"You're very good at this."

A flash of color, a light twist even as Tsuzuki made the appropriate bows, the etiquette ground into him since his very first lesson when he’d been younger, and they were around the dance floor. The music didn’t suit the steps he followed, a classic waltz versus…whatever was playing through the air. But Tsuzuki wasn’t opposed to the idea, gloved fingers warmly squeezing the other’s fingers, hand at a slim waist to help guide. They were pressed close, speed altering between the movements Tsuzuki followed in his head, and suddenly, he felt dizzy.

“My sister taught me,” he replied, dipping his partner to the side slightly to avoid the collision with another couple, costume fluttering around them. “She was a good teacher.” If but a painful one, he thought, remembering all too well the way she drilled things into him with that loving kindness.

But thinking didn’t serve well for dancing, and he just followed instinct with his yet to be named or identified companion.

He was enjoying himself, letting Tsuzuki lead, eyes moving from the masked face in front of him to the various bright colors swirling around them. They might have made him dizzy, but years of working with equally bright magics had trained his eyes to keep from being overwhelmed.

"Did she.." he mused, wondering how to drop enough hints to let the other in on the secret of his identity. He didn't mind concealing it in general, but he felt a touch guilty with it being one-sided.

Besides, whether or not Tsuzuki new changed little. "In the court where I come from, dancing was an important part of formal dinners."

His immediate response was to laugh, rather amused by the idea of it. Court, dancing, dinners. It must have been something wonderful to grow up in places fictionally beautiful. Even if his partner hadn’t described it as such, Tsuzuki couldn’t help thinking it. Besides, he remembered little of his childhood home anyway. Merely his sister’s smiling face, the loneliness that ate at him, still did on occasion, when no one was looking, the sounds of the City’s clock more familiar than necessary. But he’d rather not explain that, hardly thought about it as they made another spin around the room.

Tsuzuki liked this dance, enjoyed the company, as ever familiar as it was. He knew those eyes, couldn’t forget them because such things seemed to be a curse of sorts upon him. Tightening his hand a little, fingers shifting a little lower on the other’s hip, Tsuzuki feigned a smile.

“It sounds like a fun place!” And maybe, surely, it really was. “I’d like to visit once.”

Fai never missed a step, but his eyes went blank and under the mask he allowed himself a frown. A small one, keeping his body relaxed until the moment passed, until he shrugged it off. The smile returned, hidden but coating his words as he let his gaze drift upwards towards the decorations.

"It's very cold. I won't see it again, but if you ever visit, I hope you enjoy."

Thoughts drifted and turned as they turned, fell and disappeared as they lost themselves there, in the moment, and Tsuzuki’s light footwork carried them everywhere. Dizzy and dizzier. But through it, the charade this masque glamoured upon them, he felt it. The slightest bit of hesitation, his partner dragging his feet just the smallest amount for him to notice. Being shinigami left him without such talents as reading others, unless gifted with powers as Hisoka had, but…

Tsuzuki couldn’t ignore the way his heart clenched at the other’s response. Empty, lost. His dance fell to a stop, a gloved hand reaching to touch the mask concealing the other’s face.

“I know you.” He repeated it. I know you.

And maybe he did, perhaps he didn’t, delusional to a fault. But right now, he didn’t care about that either, even as he pulled the other, stranger, companion, equally lost soul, into a hug.

The movement started a laugh out of Fai, amused at the warmth of Tsuzuki's arms and the lightness that had appeared suddenly in his own chest. It was like Sakura-chan's smile--bright and pure and breathtaking. He always wondered how long someone could stay so kind, their heart so open. Tsuzuki obviously proved one could last a very long time like that.

"Yes, you do. But I'm not going to tell you who I am." He pulled away with a smile, his eyes bright behind the mask. He didn't really understand kindness like this, but he never took it for granted.
