Lux was decorated and ready to go. It was just waiting a certain birthday girl and her friends.

And so Tosh gets another squeeze. "Want to get some of your birthday cake, then?"

"Yes, let's," Tosh agreed. "Can't let all of Ianto's work go to waste, and it looks too good to let it sit for long."

She took Luke's hand and pulled him over toward the table with the food.

He went with her, smiling softly. Everything looked good, but he let Tosh pick everything out for him, since most Earth food was still beyond him - he just ate what people put in front of him, mostly.

And because Tosh knew that Luke didn't care for greasy things, or overly sweet things, she put him together a plate of whatever she could find that was light and simple.

And a piece of black cherry cake, although she made sure it was a small one.

He smiled gratefully, because he only recognized the salad. And the cake, of course.

"Want to sit somewhere?" he looked around, scoping out the rest of the party-goers, some of whom he recognized, some of whom he didn't. "This is quite the turnout."

"Oh yes, please," Tosh agreed, nodding. "This is... a little bit overwhelming, you know?"

Not that she wasn't enjoying it, because she absolutely was. But a little quiet time sounded really appealing.

He put his free hand to the small of her back, walking with her as they found somewhere to sit - a little out of the way, where they could observe the party. People smiling and chatting, all of Tosh's friends.

"I do know. It's strange, being so involved, huh?" he gave her a bit of a knowing look.

Tosh smiled up at him when Luke put his hand on her back, and sat down in the quiet corner they found, resting her plate on her knees.

"It really is. Usually I'm the one watching, getting things done so everyone else can do their jobs. Not really used to being the center of attention like this. It's nice, but it's strange."

"I think you deserve it. You're a good friend, and this shows how much being so genuine about that sort of thing means to people."

"Thanks," Tosh replied, letting the gratitude show in her expression rather than trying to put it into words, when she wasn't completely sure how to express how she felt about the evening anyway.

"I am never going to forget this."

"You won't have to," he said, the confidence in his voice understated, calm, as he picked out a particular vegetable he liked from his salad. "You'll go on making more things to remember."

"Yeah, I think I will," she agreed. "But this one's going to be hard to surpass. I wish there was a way to take pictures of memories, you know? Keep a little souvenir so even when they start fading, you've got something that stays fresh always."

He smiled, feeling something similar - about another memory. Something tucked away...

"I don't think you'll have a problem with that."

"No, probably not." There were other memories Tosh wished she had reminders of too, but those were just as unlikely to fade as this one.

"Pretty nice way to end a week, isn't it? Spending the evening in a room full of happy people."

"Great way, I think." he grinned. "This cake is really good, by the way."

"It is, isn't it?" Tosh agreed, to both statements, as she licked a bit of whipped cream off her finger. "Ianto was so sly, he had me thinking he wanted to bake something for Jack. We even made a Devil's Food cake and everything, just so he could keep up his ruse."

"That's pretty intense," he chuckled. "Remind me to never get on Ianto's bad side, he's quite the determined guy."

"Oh he is, you don't ever want to underestimate Ianto's ability to get done what he wants to get done," Tosh agreed. "But that determination got him on our team, so I'm glad for it."

"Everybody on your team is great," he said with a smile. "What's this?" he held up a cherry.

"They are, aren't they?" A nod, with a hint of wistfulness for the missing Owen, as she looked out at the crowd. Then her attention was focused on Luke again.

"Oh, that's a cherry. Might have a pit, so be careful, though I imagine they've probably been pitted before being put on top of a cake. They're a bit tart, that's why I like them."

He ate it, finding no pit inside.

"Weird," he said after, eyebrows raising. "I don't think I've ever tasted anything quite like that."

"Good, yeah?" Tosh daintily fished one off her own piece of cake and offered it to him. "You should see the trees they grow on, just gorgeous flowers when they're in bloom. And cherry blossoms carry an important symbolism in Japan, they're meant to represent the transience of life."

"That sounds very beautiful," he told her, imagining. He wondered if he'd seen anything like what she was describing. It was hard for him to come up with mental images for a lot of vegetation.

"Maybe there are some in the gardens at Xanadu," she mused. "I'll see if there are, and show you if I find some. They usually lose their blooms all at the same time, so it's like this snowfall of flowers."

"We'll have to go look sometime. It sound like something I'd enjoy seeing. What are they called, in Japanese, I feel like I've heard it before... Sakura?" he was thinking of the two girls he'd met so far with that name. "It's like the name 'Lily', huh?"
