[Spock looks at him, suddenly, unfathomably human.]

They thought less of me due to my mother. That, I did not mention to her, or to my father, until they provoked an emotional response.

[Idly, he looks for another starfish, and picks it out of the water carefully.]

[ Jim leans over to hold out his hands for the second starfish, so they can share them back and forth. ]

They were jerks. I wish I'd grown up on Vulcan with you, it would've been fun.

[Spock hands it over, and catches the third.]

You would have had difficulty with the cuisine.

[ Chuckling. ]

Yeah, that would have been my downfall, you're right. I don't know how I would've survived without fishsticks, as a kid.

[Don't mind him, he's musing aloud. He points out one last starfish.]

[Well, then. Enough frolicking. He gets up and starts to move back to their sandcastle project.]

You're getting sassier. [ Nudging him as they walk back to the sandcastle, he tries to push him off-balance. ] Maybe I should take disciplinary action.

[Excuse you he has perfect balance. He frowns slightly, and very subtly attempts to block Jim's foot so he'll trip a little.]

There are no Starfleet regulations regarding punishment for expressing one's honest opinion to one's commanding officer.

I could check with Janeway and find out if there's one lurking about in the future.

[ Whoa, wobbling a little. What a sneaky bastard! Time to start working on the placement of those starfish. ]

Which I am under no obligation to follow.

[Y'know, future and all. So saying, he bends down to check the starfish won't destroy any of the nice towers.]
