And what is a City overrun by Venice flair without its masque?

Come sundown, the overly-lit Palace, suffering under a sea of orchids and a white-and-gold palette, will be welcoming the ladies and gentlemen of our fair City as its guests to this year’s Valentine’s Day ball. Have no fear, the Palace staff has been given notice to help newcomers dock their gondolas!

Should they lack their own, ladies will be served a dance card, white cape and masque upon arrival. Gentlemen without can also be helped find a suitablemask.

Guests will not be introduced by name, but by their choice of pseudonym; instead, they can play the guessing game until masks are formally removed at midnight, giving their time, and maybe their hearts to some hopeful stranger.

jesusing_clown and a cohort of waiters will produce the evening’s treats; taravata will be attending on any task that calls for strong arms and keen balance; risetwice’s patisserie will be providing breads, cakes, and the evening’s tort; andeagleofautozam has promised sweets and candied souvenirs.

Allen stands in his waiter uniform, carrying a platter of cakes out. It's a big temptation not to scarf the lot down, and throughout the evening he'll be casting longing glances to the tables of cakes and treats, aaaah he wants to eat it but NO, he is determined to be professional tonight.

As for Eagle himself. Hikaru had a tray hoisted over her shoulder, propping it up with both hands. It was partially obstructing her vision in one direction. She was struggling to get around some of the other guests, her stature always made it a trick at these functions. Glancing just under the tray she spied Eagle, smiled and headed in his direction.

It's a dress she just recently purchased and she's really kind of happy to not only have a great job at City Solutions to pay for it but also to have a place to wear it out. Her hair is up in a loose bun at the nape of her neck. She steps out of the gondola and takes the offered white cape to clasp around her neck and the offered mask. It's a little nerve-wracking thinking of a party where there might be ballroom dancing. But she also knows that someone is coming to help her out on that front.

As it is, she can already smell all the sweets before she enters the ballroom and knows she'll eventually cave to them. And the music, lovely. She'd always loved music and the way it could take a person over emotionally. This was going to be fun, she already knew that. She just had to find her dance partner.

Aya was already there and waiting near the entrance. He had the mask that had been offered here, not really minding it all. His main focus was to find Dawn among the people that were there already. Not an easy task really but he did manage to catch sight of her before she put her mask on. Moving through the crowd, he made his way over to her.

"Dawn?" He smiled a little even if she wouldn't see it beneath the mask. He was wearing a white suit that he'd found in his closet. Really, he had no idea why he had it or who had given it to him but it did fit. "You look beautiful."

Last week, Merry had gone out shopping with Uni, searching for a white dress she'd like to wear to the ball. It wasn't as though she didn't already have a plethora of dresses in her closet, and to be honest, at first she'd wondered if there was even a need to go out shopping. But those were the clothes that she wore on a daily basis; the Victorian style clothes that others saw as formal, she saw as ordinary. Ginny Weasley arrives at the Ball a little more than fashionably late, if only because she wasn't entirely convinced about attending in the first place until the last possible minute. Perhaps it had something to do with being dateless, perhaps it had something to do with being dressless, but in the end, it all came down to having a good time despite it all—and she does like a good time. She deserves a bit of a good time given the past few months. The witch had entertained the idea of taking Albus, but she'd discovered his empty apartment just a few days earlier, and though she's not said anything to anyone about it, that's said it all. One less person to have on her side or at it, as it were. No matter. Not now. (Though she could have used his help in coming up with something to wear, at the very least.) She gets handed a dance card at the door, and though she's a bit at a loss about it all despite having it explained to her before, she keeps it on hand. Perhaps it comes with the territory when one is a fairy-tale princess, but Rosella likes getting dressed up for formal occasions, especially balls. And Valentine's Day has always held a particular significance with her, filled with old memories of departed friends and a lingering sort of acceptance, in hindsight, that the old maxim still rings true: it always gets better.

For anyone who knows her, she's hardly difficult to pick out--both from the nuances of her appearance and from her habit of lingering on the edge of the dance floor, watching the passerby with great interest--but for anyone who doesn't, she's just another fair damsel contributing to the elegant display of the ballroom. But beneath her mask, she's smiling her best, because this sort of affair is familiar to her, and comfortable, and she's eager to see what wonders the night might hold.

Cinna entered the ballroom with the ease of someone used to these sorts of events. Something identifiable, something unique to his friends so he could be recognized by them if they needed him.

Looking around, he frowned under his mask. Finding his date was going to be difficult. Mingling through the crowd, Cinna studied the color of eyes, the width of shoulders, the angles of a jawlines, things he habitually noticed as a stylist, and things he hoped would give him a clue to Angela's whereabouts.

One didn't have to be a stylist to pick out fine details; sometimes, all it took was a decade at the hands of the Capitol, entertaining for the masses. Not that it would take a stylist or an expert to pick out the pair of mockingjays adorning Cinna's wrists--just someone who knew that those cufflinks were no ordinary birds, but a tiny spark of rebellion all their own. There weren't many people who would see them as anything more than birds wrought in silver, but for the few who would, Cinna might as well have been wearing a nametag.

Which wasn't to say that it didn't go both ways, because it did. Arriving at sundown, Derek shows up wearing an all black suit, even the tie is black. He dones the available mask at the party and walks into the ballroom looking around at the festivities. He's rarely one to pass up a party or a celebration so this is right up his alley, even if it's a little dressy for his usual kind of party. He heads over to one of the many trays with food on them to peruse the options. The ballroom is really beautiful. Everyone looks great. And he's looking forward to having a great time.

Grell took a light step into the room, dressed in a long red ball gown, the edges tucked with frills. His hair was curled and done up with a few set roses and curled his fingers over his mask. The edges were shaped like a fox though he had cut out the part with the very sly and sharp teeth so it displayed only the edges of his lips and downwards. He produced a small fan and opened it, the edges of it flicking against his hand as he waved it against his face. Oh, he was a little nervous as he entered, though he took dainty yet bold steps forward. He fit the dress well from shoulder to toes, his curves fitting in all the right places.

William had never let him out much and the fact he was attending such a ball as himself and not some cheap plain boring ol' butler was enough to let the excitement wash away the nervous air. Even if his date was hidden in the crowd he would know that body anywhere. Sebastian was one of a kind with long features and a handsome build. Still, he looked like a lost rose in a thorn bush, but he was beautiful Madame behind a mask.

The demon butler had taken it upon himself to offer his services as a waiter for the occasion-- mostly in order to make sure that his Young Master had actually come to the dance. If he didn't...well, he would have words with the Phantomhive afterward. The singular thing that could ruin the evening (for him, at least) was Grell, and there he was, walking in just now.

...wearing a dress, no less.

Alas, it was to be expected. But there was an advantage to it, strange as though it seemed. And as soon as he'd spotted Grell, Sebastian was exceptionally glad that he'd told him to wear a red dress. The soul reaper stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the sea of white and black, making him easy to spot even from the corner of his eye.

Granted, the death god could probably still sense him...but there were ways to mask oneself from others. Sebastian would simply allow himself to melt into the crowd now. With luck, he wouldn't have to deal with the redhead at all that night.

Hanna can't help but feel nervous and out of place as he arrives. He's never been to anything this fancy or elaborate before...he never even went to his prom, so he has zero experience with big dances or fancy clothes.

Where there is a party, there is Finnick Odair; it's a simple constant of the universe. He hasn't brought a date with him, half by fate and half by choice, so he's completely free to roam as he prowls through the crowd, pausing only to flash a smile or offer a compliment every so often as he goes. This is what he does, the golden boy of Panem, and it shows in every bit of his impeccable act--because he is wearing a mask tonight, and it's not the one on his face.

No, tonight he's Finnick Odair, Panem's favorite victor, and it shows in every move he makes.

Angela can pick those beautiful eyes from a mile away and over the heads of a crowd of people milling about with drinks in their hands. But even without the clue of Finnick's face, the way he walks and the charm he exudes hits Angela's radar, hard enough to know that it's not only the suit that makes the man.

She's tempted to leave the punch bowl and go bother him like she usually does, but Angela decides to let him come and bug her. Maybe it's the fancy dress or those heels he claims to like or the fact she saw him only a few hours earlier in the women's section of the store as he helped pick out this outift. Whatever it is, Angela remains at her station, sipping at her drink, but keeping her eyes on him.

Because this is the City, it was less than usually difficult to find someone to tailor a suit to Eriol's height. He moves through the crowd with the comfort and ease of someone who has attended many such occasions in the past, his gold mask a vibrant contrast to his sharp blue eyes and dark gray suit. He wears a familiar smile and answers most commonly to the name Trickster. He makes an excellent, if child-sized, dance partner.

Alester was randomly assigned to be Hiyori's escort, but of course he can hardly be expected to dance with her for the entire night. His tuxedo is, of course, rented, but despite having never worn one before, he manages to wear it well. His mask (http://www.partydelights.co.uk/images/masks/MASK040.JPG), on the other hand, is more notable, considering the spray of peacock feather's coming off it. It's a mask meant more for attracting attention than concealment. He doesn't see the point otherwise--you should be able to recognize the people you know whether masked or not, at least if you actually interact with them, and if not then the added anonymity doesn't really matter. Still, other people act more inhibited when masked, so he does enjoy this sort of function.

Demyx, quite frankly, has no idea why he's there, other than he got the invitation. And he was told that he was supposed to meet someone named Vanille, not that it really mattered to him. He's carrying his mask, not particularly inclined to wear it, although his hood is up. He seems to be not particularly inclined towards dancing, or anything else, really. He looks fairly confused, but he's looking for people that he knows. Care to go up to him anyway?

Vanille arrives, looking totally excited to be there—and she really is. It's her first time at a formal event, and she hadn't even really known what a ball was until she got there. She's just wandering around, admiring the absolutely gorgeous decor and smiling at everybody she walks past. No, she has no idea how to dance, hence why she's kept mostly off the dance floor so far. But she's having fun, regardless! Feel free to come and pester her.

Luke (choosing to 'ignore' a large part of the dress code) came beautifully attired in his usual white ensemble. Dressed in a long dress (http://img2.doitstyle.com/super/4c34814d93b5a.jpg) that left her shoulders and most of her back free, her heels (http://whatladybuys.com/product-pics/Christian-Louboutin-Nude-Patent-Slingback-248-Styles-1.jpg) adding a few inches to her height, and her hair tumbling down her shouders and back in loose waves, she felt suitably dressed for the evening.

Her first reflex after accepting the white cape and masque and walking into the ballroom were to look around for a familiar face, which made her laugh softly. There weren't exactly any familiar faces around. Her bad.

Of course, she was masked (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/weissgrrl/il_fullxfull139405454.jpg) as well, but anyone that knew her well enough would be able to recognize her thanks to her choice. Thankfully, she was tall enough to pull off the look without ungodly high heels, but every so often, there'd be a flash of silver strappy heels peeking from under the hem of the dress as she moved.
