[Getting tugged along, nbd. One curious side effect he didn't foresee is having exposed arms where Jim usually casually pats. Spock is getting a full dose of that excitement.]

I trust you are not planning to catch crabs and put them in the moat?

[ !!! Spock is psychic. ]

No. One for me, one for you and then one in medbay for Bones.

[ YANKING on his hand and then speeding ahead as he lets go. To the rockpools! ]

Should a single crab not be more appropriate for Doctor McCoy, and perhaps two starfish, if we can locate any?

Spock, do you really want to explain to Bones why he doesn't get to be a starfish?

[ Cause Jim definitely isn't, you can sign your own death warrant. ]

[logistical]

He does not understand the logic?

Neither one of you means any less or any more than the other to me, starfish your way out of that. We're catching crabs.

[ So there. ]

[He looks surprised.]

I did not intend. [Small huff.] I was attempting a pun.

I know, but he's touchy about getting replaced even if he won't say it. He's still feeling out how to rub along with you, y'know?

[ Doot doot, climbing those rockpools now. ]

[logistical]

Replaced?

[The surprise fades into worry.]

He intends to leave the ship?

[Because there's really no other way the word "replace" fits in with "crew" in Spock's mind. He's not capable of love but he attempts to treat everyone fairly.]

[ Sighing, he sits on a rock with his hands patting the damp lichen, ankles spread down either side like a boy. ]

We've been best friends for a long time. I haven't been as ... fond of anyone else, like I am of you, all that while. [ Jim shrugs. ] I don't want to tease him.

[logistical]

[Carefully sits down beside Jim, studies the ripples in the water.]

... Jealousy?

[A pause.]

Or fear?

He has nothing to be afraid of.

[ Leaning against him for a moment, he scoffs under his breath. It's a funny thing to need to put into words. ]

You and Bones are my first real friends.

[logistical]

[Spock looks at him intently. They shared a consciousness for a while, he knows plenty now. Jim wouldn't leave him or replace him. He can't.]

I am not the one who requires convincing.

[He picks out a starfish, and gently nudges it towards Jim so he can catch it.]

However, I am reliably informed that there are no guarantees... in such matters.

[hischair]

[ He holds the starfish carefully once scooped up, making sure the underside doesn't touch his palm. That intent look is returned, albeit shortly. ]

It'll be fine, don't worry. He likes you, otherwise he wouldn't grouse as much as he does.

[logistical]

He certainly made a valiant attempt to demonstrate otherwise.

[Made. Less so, now, when they're trying to get used to each other. Spock had seen McCoy crumble, and vice versa. It had affected them both. Made them more careful.]

Was he displeased with his gift? I did not inquire.

[hischair]

You should, because I'm not tattle-telling on anyone. To him or to you. [ The starfish is offered. ] You'll just have to make First Contact over and over again.

[logistical]

[He sighs inwardly, and takes the starfish, and is about to say something deep and profound about honestly being bad at human things when something weird about Jim's phrasing catches his eye instead.]

Tattle-telling? Is that not common amongst human children?

[hischair]

[ Deep and profound his ass, everyone's in shorts with sandy feet here. The wisest Jim's going to get is staying in good spirits. ]

Don't Vulcan children have something similar? Grassing up the kid who did something.

[logistical]

[Excuse u.]

We do not. No. If there is a trespass, it is dealt with promptly, and by the parties involved. It is not logical to do otherwise.

[hischair]

Even the sneakiest of Vulcans?

[ Implying youuu. ]

[logistical]

[Spock looks at him, suddenly, unfathomably human.]

Vulcan children can be cruel.

[hischair]

[ ... Spock, why. Those Goddamn eyes. ]

I wouldn't have let them.

[ Doesn't even need to think about saying it, and in reference to his favorite. ]

[logistical]

They thought less of me due to my mother. That, I did not mention to her, or to my father, until they provoked an emotional response.

[Idly, he looks for another starfish, and picks it out of the water carefully.]
