Summary; Finals are over, the spring dance is here--finally a way for everyone, student and teacher, to relax! All the planning, preparation, and hard work has paid off. Students of all ages and grades are invited, and their teachers are sure to be there too. The school superintendents (read: the Deities) have done their very best to light up the Square. So whether you're from Westerberg High, Trinity Girls' School, Cutler's, Bikini Bottom Middle, or City U, you must have received your engraved invitation by now. Dress is formal, but the occasion is celebratory. Come one, come all. (And even those who aren't cursed may still come to take in the decorations, the food, the entertainment, and the merriment... or they can take pictures for blackmail when this is over.) So come and spend an evening under the stars...

Something about his hands on her makes her blush... So she tries to cover it up with a quick reply. "I-I guess--at least you're not just a musclehead."

Rita: never able to give straight compliments.

Her stuttering makes him more aware of his hands, and right now, he doesn't feel strong enough to actually pick her up. His own face flushes, though not exactly happily.

"What's that mean?"

[negativegate]

She flushes more, feeling like explaining would just be more embarrassing, and tries to avoid it instead.

"N-nevermind! Let's just get back to dancing!"

She thinks he's a musclehead... He gives a little huff and pulls his hands away so he can start dancing again. It's not like he's dumb or anything...

[negativegate]

Rita sighs, no longer smiling--it's not like she's annoyed he moved his hands away or anything!

"What's the problem, anyway?" She'd rather ask than keep dancing when they're annoyed with each other...

[blackshadow]

His answer comes tersely, "Nothing."

He doesn't even know how to answer that.

[negativegate]

And she isn't satisfied at all with that answer, scowling. "Really?

[blackshadow]

Tyr doesn't look any less pleased. "I'm really not some 'muscle head'."

[negativegate]

"Huh?" She pauses and looks up at him in disbelief to argue, "That's not what I said!" At least, she's pretty certain that isn't what she said...Sort of...

[blackshadow]

He questions himself if he heard wrong, but wondering won't get him anywhere. He presses on insistently, "Then what did you say?"

[negativegate]

"I-I said..." She trails off, trying to remember exactly what she stammered out. She can't recall the exact words, though, so she blushes and mutters, "I said you're not a musclehead even though you're strong. Okay?"

[blackshadow]

Tyr pauses when she clarifies, and, feeling foolish now, flushes. "...Good.

"I've been working harder to get ahead in my classes, too, so...you know..."

He's...not.

[negativegate]

She blushes bright red--and then, without thinking, bluntly asks, "You? Really?"

[blackshadow]

"It doesn't really show, huh?" He laughs as he asks that, but it's an embarrassed sort of laughter.

[negativegate]

"Huh?" She supposes that's probably true, but it's not actually what she was thinking of. She feels awkward, yet it's already weird enough, so she might as well explain...

"Actually, I...I was thinking you probably weren't the type to be interested in the material."

[blackshadow]

He looks away when she says that, suddenly feeling exposed. It's true that he didn't have any interest initially. And even now...he's more interested in being her friend being a scientist.

"I wasn't at first...But...once I gave it more attention, I liked it."

[negativegate]

That gets her interest, and she tilts her head curiously. She hadn't realized...Maybe she wasn't paying as much attention to him as she thought she was. "You have? I...didn't really know."

Why does that make her feel awkward?

He feels awkward, too. She's his friend, but he...really likes her, too. Even if it's weird. "It's fine." A second later, he admits, "I wondered what you liked so much about it, so I gave it a try- and it wasn't that bad."

[negativegate]

"You...That was your reason?" she echoes, face still pink. It shouldn't be all that weird of a reason, really, but it makes her feel...she's not certain, actually--just that her heart speeds up a little.

"So, uh...you like that stuff now?"

[blackshadow]

He nods and answers more certainly, "Yeah. It's pretty fun." It's not so bad to admit that... It's not like there's anything weird about getting into something a friend is into.

[negativegate]

There's definitely nothing weird about it. Rita just knows she's being a weirdo, so she tries to ignore that, asking, "Are you interested in doing some research now?" She really is curious--and she thinks in the back of her mind that it might be fun to work with him.

[blackshadow]

He blinks in surprise at the question. "Right now?"

Though he doesn't want to say no either way. A part of him has hoped that they would work together sometime... It's too bad they hadn't been partners.

[negativegate]

"No, no," she waves her hands quickly, clarifying, "I mean--you know, anytime..."

She is hoping he'd agree...For some reason, the idea of Tyr being into research makes her pretty happy.

[blackshadow]

It feels like they're on the same page now, and having her ask that...it makes him feel pretty warm. He smiles and gives bright smile.

"Then I'm up for it any time. Your research is pretty interesting, right?"

[negativegate]

She feels a bit less awkward now, her flush fading a bit, and nods.

"Of course. I mean, I research all kinds of things, but it's always interesting."
