tampered | (no subject)

Rose licks some off her lips. The cake is quite good.

"Sometimes. You've never been married before?" It shocks her.

This is a question he's really wished she wouldn't have asked. Surely she could have figured it out from his other self's talking about their grand-daughter. In truth, it's a subject he's avoided, so He'll try to avoid it again.

"What was that?" he asks, wiping the icing off his nose.

"Cake?" she says rather obviously. It's not surprising to her that he's not answering her question but since he's surprised her with this wedding engagement then she won't press it. "So, what next?"

"Dunno." he replies, dipping his finger in some more cake.

"What do you think?"

"Honeymoon, dancing, drinks?" She guesses thinking that perhaps he hasn't planned this as well as he had thought. Maybe weddings were different where he came from.

"Drinks? Ah..."

He looks over and his other self has already started pulling out a champagne bottle, as well as one of a very peculiar color. Where did he get that from? He realizes to his horror what his other self is about to do.

"Ohhhhhh..."

"What is it?" She turns her head to see his other self with the drinks. "What is that he's got?" It's a bit familiar and yet she wonders. It can't be, can it?

He watches as his other self starts pouring champagne to the guests and gets ready to hand them their own glasses.

"He's the best man," he moans. "I should have realized."

"Oh God he's not..." She can't even finish her sentence as she guesses that soon there will be a speech.

10 is helpless as his other self calls attention to everyone and begins his speech. He makes light jokes about how poorly they tried to hide their relationship and how 10 is way too old for her.

"The horror," 10 mutters to himself. "Ohhhh, the horror."

All Rose can do is just stare in horror. She thought they had done a good job at hiding their relationship.

"You're not that old. I mean, you don't look it," she comments looking at her Doctor before reaching for his hand.

Despite the earlier jabs, his other self concludes with something about how one ages that they feel it's time to settle, and commends 10 on his choice. 10 still shakes his head and tries to look gracious as the toast is made.

Rose just continues to stare and then looks back at her glass. She smiles and looks over at her Doctor. "Nice save, I suppose."

He groans. It was a nice ending, but he specifically told the little so and so no speech.

"Yeah," he says. "Nice save."

He downs his glass in one go.

"Reckon you never thought you'd be giving your own best man speech," she laughs before taking a swig of her drink.

He manages a small smirk. He hopes that'll never happen again. He can only be grateful that it wasn't his immediate predecessor.

"I need a refill."

She takes his glass and refills it before handing it back to him.

"Here you go, luv." This is all still slightly amusing to her.

He downs it in one go again. The speech has really left him unnerved.

"Soooooo, what's next?" he asks. "Seems to be a theme. 'What's next'.

There's a laugh that escapes her as she feels a bit of the alcohol. "Seems so. What about dancing?" She beams thoughtfully.

Ah. The one thing he didn't think about. He looks over at the group, who seem to be interested in resuming their card game.

"Right, dancing," he says. "We need music."

"You didn't bring anything?" she asks with a frown.

He looks at her almost insulted.

"'Course I did," he replies, before dashing to the guests and bringing back Burke's mobile.

"See? We've got music."

"So it seems like we do," she says looking a bit impressed although inwardly amused.

"You can still dance, right?"

He gives her a look as he fiddles with the mobile. At first it blasts an 80's power ballad, then he starts a reggae tune. Finally a slow piano number starts playing.

"I'll show you," he says, as he takes her and starts dancing to the music, being careful not to step on her.

The choices at first cause her to make a face. But soon enough she's dancing slowly with him amazed that she's keeping up. She rests her head on his shoulder and sighs contently.
